'Celluloid' tells the story of Malayalam cinema. The film is based on the life and struggles of J C Daniel, the father of Malayalam Cinema. It also takes a peek into the life of P K Rosy, the first heroine in Malayalam.

'Celluloid' which tries to revive the memories of the bygone era of Malayalam cinema, delineates the ebb and flow in the life and career of Daniel who did not get any recognition for his first silent movie 'Vigathakumaran'.

The film is an attempt to identify how and why Daniel and Rosy were disregarded by and isolated from both life and cinema and thus pay penance to the cruelty meted out to them by the Malayalam film industry.

1928 is the period of 'Vigathakumaran'. Kamal's 'Celluloid' is set in that period encompassing the struggles and pains that Daniel underwent in the making of the film and the tragic story of Rosy. The script is based on the novel Nashtanayikawritten by Vinu Abraham and the biography of J C Daniel (J C Danielinte Jeevithakatha) written by Chelangatt Gopalakrishnan.

Prithviraj appears as J C Daniel and Mamta Mohandas does the role of Janet, wife to J C Daniel. New face Chandhni, one of the contestants of Josco Indian Voice of Mazhavil Manorama, does the role of Rosy.

Sreenivasan, Nedumudi Venu, Siddique, Irshad, Thampi Antony, T G Ravi, Jayaraj Warrier are the other important cast.
